Updating Your Payment Method

Updating Your Payment Method

Your payment method can be changed, added, or removed through the Stripe Customer Portal at any time. Updates take effect on your next billing cycle.

Access the billing portal

  1. Go to /dashboard/settings
  2. Click “Manage Billing”
  3. You’ll be redirected to the Stripe Customer Portal
  4. Select “Payment methods” from the left sidebar

Adding a new card

In the Payment methods section, click “Add payment method.” Enter your card details and click “Add.” The card is saved but is NOT set as default unless you choose it from the menu.

Changing your default payment method

After adding a new card, select it from the “Default payment method” dropdown. All future renewals will charge this card instead.

Removing an old card

Click the three-dot menu next to any saved payment method and select “Remove.” You cannot remove your current default payment method — set a new default first.

Payment failures and dunning

If a charge fails (expired card, insufficient funds, etc.), Stripe automatically retries:

  • 3 days after the first failure
  • 5 days after the second failure
  • 7 days after the third failure

During this retry period, you retain full access to your tier. Your subscription pauses only if all three retries are exhausted.

Recovering from a failed payment

  1. Update your payment method in the billing portal (see “Adding a new card” above)
  2. Stripe will retry the charge within 24 hours
  3. You’ll receive an email when the retry succeeds
  4. Your access continues uninterrupted

If you do not update your payment method and all retries fail, your subscription status changes to “past due” and you lose access to paid features. Re-enable access by updating your payment method — there’s no need to re-purchase.

Billing address

Your billing address is stored in your Stripe account and used for address verification and tax calculation. Update it in the Stripe Customer Portal under “Billing details.”

Questions about a charge

All invoice details and charge breakdowns are available in the Stripe Customer Portal. Click “View invoice” next to any past charge to see itemized details.
