他社のライバル製品による販売不振を打開すべくデビューした、スポーティーなハイグレードモデルである。デビュー当時、ホンダ・N360の登場によって軽自動車は普通車と同等の走りが求められるようになった。これに対して軽自動車メーカーは、軽自動車の高性能化を積極的に推進し、中にはリッターあたり100馬力レベルのレーシングエンジンに匹敵するハイチューンが当たり前となってしまっていた。この傾向に対する富士重工業の回答が若年層の心をくすぐるスポーティーモデル、「ヤングS」と「ヤングSS」だった。 一方、ヤングSSは標準型のエンジンであるEK32型を強化したものを搭載している。このエンジンは圧縮比を上げ、2基の、特殊メッキを施したシリンダーを用いるなどして、性能そのものが強化されたものである。また、サスペンションも強化されている。こうして、レーシングエンジン並の強化が施された結果、0 - 400m加速は4名乗車時でも20.6秒、最高速度は120 km/hへの到達を可能とした。
