Overview

The original Porsche Cayenne entered the global market to a mixed reception, but proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV with comparably good handling and powerful engines. The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup. In the eight model years of the E1 generation, a total of 276,652 units were produced. The name Cayenne was coined by Manfred Gotta. The base model Cayenne is powered by a 3.2-litre VR6 engine producing 250 PS. The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the Volkswagen unit. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h is 9.

Cayenne GTS Porsche Design Edition 3 (2010)

In May 2009, a limited-edition version based on the Cayenne GTS was introduced, designed by Porsche Design Studio and including a Porsche Design chronograph Type P'6612. Production was limited to 1,000 units worldwide.

07 Buyer's guide

Who it suits

  • Buyers who want ground clearance, a high seating position and load space: the typical strengths of the SUV body.

Check before you buy

  • Check the emissions equipment (particulate filter, NOx treatment) and the destination country's emissions rules; some markets restrict used diesels.
  • Ask for service records: turbocharged engines are sensitive to oil changes and cool-down habits.
  • Inspect for corrosion at sills, floor, subframes and suspension mounts, and replace perishable rubber (hoses, bushes, boots) at import.
  • Read the auction sheet grade and notes, and verify the odometer against service and inspection records. How to read an auction sheet
  • Run a history check (accidents, flood, mileage) before you bid. History check guide
  • Import age rules: this generation already qualifies in Canada, United Kingdom. Confirm the rule for your exact vehicle with customs before buying. Landed-cost calculator
